It goes without saying that some antioxidant fruits contain more free radical busting antioxidants than others.  That is not to say that antioxidant fruits that are lower in antioxidants are inferior, because they may contain other essential nutrients.  But you should get to know, which are the #1antioxidant foods for dealing with free radicals.

The #1 Antioxidant Fruits

There have been many recommendations regarding the #1 antioxidant fruits.  It has been generally agreed that berry fruits such as blackberries, bilberries, raspberries and strawberries are rich in antioxidants.  In fact the American wild blueberry is frequently reported to be the #1 antioxidant fruit, so for some, it is almost patriotic to eat them!

Free Radicals

Another name for an unbalanced oxygen atom is a free radical. As you will remember, from your days at high school, an atom has a nucleus comprised of protons and neutrons, around which electrons circulate. All is well if the electrons are paired up, but difficulties crop up if an electron is missing, as happens with unstable free radicals. Then the free radicals steal electrons from normal, or stable body cells and start a sequence known as oxidation.

Although eating plenty of antioxidant fruit cannot guarantee immunity from all ills, it can assist in limiting the over production of free radicals, linked to degenerative disease.  Therefore, if you want to know whether antioxidant fruits can help to protect you from heart disease, and some forms of cancer, the answer is, Yes.

Researchers have suggested that including antioxidant fruits in your diet is better than just relying on supplements.  It seems that there are a combination of nutrients, in some antioxidant fruits, that have a greater beneficial effect than any single nutrient could.  Moreover, antioxidant fruits in season are relatively cheap.  There are markets, where competition is such that you can buy as much as you require, at knock down prices.

There have been reported shortages of broad beans in some States, probably because they are rated near the top of legumes for antioxidants.  It is good to know that the message is spreading, and that more and more people are becoming aware of the health advantages of antioxidant foods in their diets.
