Herbal Antioxidants
Although oxygen is vital to our existence, the process of oxidation produces free radicals that can damage your health. Fortunately,
there are herbal antioxidants, found in many fruits and vegetables that can assist in protecting us against free radicals. So it is up to
each, and every one of us, to ensure that we include sufficient herbal antioxidants in our diets to keep the free radicals at bay.
Free Radicals
Free radicals are unbalanced oxygen atoms. As you will know, from your school days, an atom has a nucleus consisting of protons and neutrons,
outside which electrons travel. This is fine so long as the electrons are paired up, but difficulties occur if an electron is not paired, as with
unbalanced oxygen atoms. The free radicals steal electrons from balanced, or stable body cells and set up a sequence known as oxidation.
Oxidation is easy to observe, as you may have noted when you slice an apple in half, and it turns brown. Something is going on, but when
oxidation occurs in the body free radicals are produced. They may cause cellular damage, and eventually lead to degenerative disorders
including heart disease, and some forms of cancer. However, herbal antioxidants are standing by, but we must include them in our diet
because our bodies can't manufacture them on their own.
Sources of Herbal Antioxidants
Luckily, herbal antioxidants are abundant in fruit and vegetables. There have been publicity campaigns, run by health authorities,
advising people to include between 5 - 9 helpings of fruits and vegetables per day in their diets. It seems obvious that if you err towards
the higher end, and have 8 - 9 helpings rather than 5, you will be getting the benefit of more herbal antioxidants, to protect yourself from
those free radicals.
Berry fruits are rich in herbal antioxidants, so they should be included with your fruits and vegetables intake. There are herbal
antioxidant supplements, available from health stores, that are frequently made from berry extracts.
